Oral surgeons do root canals?

I had a tooth that was like broke in half with a cavity and my dentis filled it anyways. Well now a year later it just started to hurt. So i went to another dentist and he said just from the looks of it i need a root canal. Should i get a root canal or get it pulled? I want to go to an oral surgeon so i can get put to sleep tho can they do that to give me a root canal?
