Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeon Education?

I am doing a project for school and I need to know the education needed to become an oral surgeon. I looked on the University of Maryland Medical Center website and all of their oral surgeons have both a D.D.S. and a M.D. So, does this mean that you have to go to both Medical and Dental School? I also read about some programs that award you an M.D. during your residency. I'm so confused and I really, really need help!
