The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons states on their website that their mission statement is “to provide a means of self-government relating to professional standards, ethical behavior and responsibilities of its fellows and members; to contribute to the public welfare; to advance the specialty; and to support its fellows and members through education, advocacy and research.”
Each year millions of Americans have elective oral surgery to remove their wisdom teeth. Current research shows that there is no scientific benefit in removing healthy impacted wisdom teeth. In fact the research shows that removing healthy impacted wisdom teeth can be more harmful than not having the surgery.
By promoting the idea of removing healthy impacted wisdom teeth in teenagers The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are not living up to their mission statement. Already The British National Institute for Clinical Excellence has recommended that the practice of getting healthy impacted wisdom teeth out should be stopped and discontinued.
The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are being unethical and irresponsible by not adapting a similar stance on oral surgery. Could it be because they are afraid of having their specialty lose some of it’s thunder? Certainly there is a case towards the fact that oral surgeons across the country are earning thousands upon thousands of dollars by continuing the current practice. The average cost to remove wisdom teeth is atleast $1,000 if you are getting all 4 teeth out.
The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is contributing to a public health hazard by allowing the prophylactic removal of pathology-free impacted third molars to continue. Take action by writing to The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons to tell them how you feel on this matter. Further you can take action by writing to your local house representative.
